Peru: GDP expands 58.49% in April 2021

14:47 | Lima, Jun. 15.

Peru's national production increased 58.49% in April this year due to favorable results in most economic sectors —except farming— the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Tuesday.

"It is worth noting that this result is compared to April 2020, a month that witnessed a sharp contraction (-39.09%) in national production, due to the lockdown to contain the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country," the INEI explained.

"It is important to note that the April 2021 production result is still below the level seen in the same month of 2019 (pre-pandemic levels), showing a decrease of 3.46% compared to the same period," it added.

The INEI stated that national production increased 13.80% between January and April 2021 and fell 3.37% in the 12-month period ending April 2021.

The result in April 2021 was determined by higher production levels in most sectors: mining and hydrocarbons; manufacturing; electricity, gas, and water; construction; commerce; transportation, storage, and messaging; accommodation and restaurants; telecommunications; financial services; and services provided to companies. Only farming saw a reduction in the national production.
