09:12 | Lima, Dec. 28.

Former Commander General of the National Police of Peru (PNP), Javier Gallardo Mendoza, turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday night —after the Judiciary ordered 10-day preliminary detention in the investigation into irregular promotions at the PNP.

Gallardo Mendoza was detained by police officers after giving an interview to a TV local channel in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

Yesterday, the Sixth Preparatory Investigation Court ordered the preliminary arrest of Gallardo Mendoza and other seven people involved in alleged irregular promotions at the PNP during the Government of Pedro Castillo, who was impeached and removed from office on December 7.

Furthermore, the aforementioned court ordered the search, unlocking, and lifting of the secrecy of the communications of those investigated.

In compliance with the Judicial mandate of the Sixth Preparatory Investigation Court, 27 properties were raided in various parts of the country —in a joint effort undertaken with the Public Ministry.

As part of this operation, carried out by the High Complexity Investigations Division (Diviac) and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the home and offices of former Defense Minister Walter Ayala in Lima's Surco district were also raided. However, a preliminary arrest warrant has not been issued against the Defense sector's former head.

The PNP affirmed that absolute respect for the fundamental rights of those investigated is guaranteed —within the current legal framework and due process.
