Peru: Former Lima Mayor leaves prison facility, to serve house arrest

16:10 | Lima, Mar. 10.

Former Lima Mayor Luis Castañeda Lossio left Miguel Castro Castro Prison on Tuesday afternoon, as the Judicial Branch —on March 5— revoked the 24-month preventive detention previously imposed on him. Instead, it ordered his house arrest.

He was transported inside a police van to his home located in Lima's Surco district, Canal N news channel reported.

Last week, Castañeda Lossio was ordered to pay a bond of S/100,000 (about US$29,197) within 72 hours.

Likewise, the respondent must refrain from communicating with the other citizens under investigation, witnesses, or judicial experts. He is also banned from giving statements to any media outlet on this case.

Preventive detention

On February 14, Judge Maria Alvarez Camacho ordered 24-month preventive detention of Castañeda Lossio, within the framework of investigations over the alleged commission of felonies linked to money laundering, illicit association to commit a crime, and aggravated collusion. That evening, he was transferred to Miguel Castro Castro Prison located in Lima's peripheral San Juan de Lurigancho district.

Castañeda Lossio is accused of being part of a criminal organization that favored those companies with projects such as the Linea Amarilla (Yellow Line) and the Addendum Nº2 for the awarding of such project.

He served as Mayor of Lima Metropolitan Area in the following periods of time: 2003-2010 and 2015-2018.
