Peru: Judiciary annuls preventive detention, orders house arrest of former Lima Mayor

23:40 | Lima, Mar. 5.

The Peruvian Judicial Branch's Anti-Corruption Criminal Chamber on Thursday revoked the 24-month preventive detention imposed last month on former Mayor of Lima Luis Castañeda Lossio. Instead, it ordered his house arrest.

This court also confirmed the appearance with restrictions measure on former Congressman Jose Luna Galvez and ex-Lima Municipality official Giselle Zegarra for the alleged felony of illicit association to commit crimes and others.

Castañeda Lossio must pay a bond of S/100,000 (about US$29,197) within 72 hours. The house arrest period will begin once the debt has been settled. Likewise, the respondent must refrain from communicating with the other citizens under investigation, witnesses, or judicial experts. He is also banned from giving statements to any media outlet on this case.

Castañeda Lossio is accused of being part of a criminal organization that favored those companies with projects such as the Linea Amarilla (Yellow Line) and the Addendum Nº2 for the awarding of such project.

He served as Mayor of Lima Metropolitan Area in the following periods of time: 2003-2010 and 2015-2018.
