The forest fire that has raged in the San Antonio de Torontoy sector and the district of Machu Picchu has not affected the llaqta or Inca citadel of Machu Picchu —located in the region of Cusco— or the normal development of tourism in the area, the Ministry of Culture reported on Thursday.

According to the latest data released by the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco, the fire —which is 10 kilometers away from the llaqta— is over 90% contained.

It should be noted that brigade members have been working hard at kilometer 95 of the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu railway.

The Ministry of Culture, through DDC Cusco office, has been supporting fire mitigation efforts since Monday, June 28 —the day the fire began— in order to protect the country's cultural heritage.

DDC Cusco brigades are working in the area together with staff of the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), and the Peruvian National Police (PNP), as well as with municipal patrol guards.

DDC Cusco experts have been evaluating the level of affectation of one of the platforms situated at the agricultural terrace inside the archaeological monument of Llamakancha.

The fire's impact has been minimized thanks to timely intervention, as well as to permanent maintenance and vegetation cutting works within the monument area.
