The
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to forge a prosperous, just, creative, and democratic country, as it commemorates its 200th anniversary of institutional life.
In a video shared on social media, the ministry stated that it renews its civic and republican values, as well as the prevalence of the permanent interest of the State.
Additionally, the government department renews the priority assigned to the citizen service, the functional and personal integrity, as well as the imperative of a progressive meritocracy.
Founded on August 3, 1821, the ministry recalled that it has helped define the territory, State, and nation. Besides, it has directly contributed to protecting and setting the sovereignty of Peru and its borders, as is the case of land limits with neighboring countries and The Hague ruling in 2014.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has helped craft the image of Peru in the world as a peaceful and cooperative nation, by leading and joining successive processes of American, Latin American, Andean, and Amazonian integration, going from inter-American congresses in the 19th century to the Pacific Alliance and Binational Cabinets in the 21st century," the video indicated.
Additionally, since the mid-20th century, it has led initiatives to project the country's interests around the world, often taking the leading role in the construction of multilateralism —from the Andean Community to the United Nations— in matters related to peacekeeping, disarmament, the law of the sea, the human rights regime, the defense of democracy, the fight against drugs and climate change, among other topics.
As explained in the video, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's multilateral and universal vocation is embodied in the illustrious Ambassador Javier Perez de Cuellar, former Secretary-General of the United Nations (1982-1991).
"In recent years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has worked to protect and better serve the great community of Peruvians living abroad," it said.
Moreover, in the institution's bicentennial of foundation, it confirms its obligation to Peruvian society, to be increasingly inclusive, focused on human development, attentive to gender equality, and open to cultural as well as linguistic diversity.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the Congress of the Republic has conveyed greetings for its 200 years of institutional life and Diplomat's Day.
