During the 17th OECD Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer highlighted the region's challenges and opportunities, emphasizing citizen security, digitalization, sustainable financing, and coordination among different government levels as key factors for development.

At the OECD meeting on strengthening the organization's development strategy, the government official emphasized that, as a maritime and megadiverse country, Peru is committed to the sustainable use of marine and ocean resources.

Similarly, the Cabinet member said Peru is capable of leading proposals that integrate the conservation of these ecosystems with productive development, and that such initiatives can drive sustainable transformation across the region.

During the event —organized by the OECD Development Centre, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the French Development Agency— the Peruvian minister called for strengthening partnerships to mobilize sustainable financing in the region with the aim of advancing development in social infrastructure, clean energy, education, resilient agriculture, and other key sectors.

"Betting on Latin America and the Caribbean is, ultimately, betting on a region with extraordinary capabilities and inexhaustible resources," Schialer added at the closing of the event on Monday, while also highlighting the strategic importance of Latin America for the OECD.

OECD accession process

Moreover, the minister attended the 20th Meeting of the Steering Group of the Latin America and Caribbean Regional Program, where he highlighted that Peru's accession process to the OECD has promoted institutional learning.

"A greater OECD presence in Latin America and the Caribbean means stronger institutions, better governance, and deeper integration," he stated.

The OECD Ministerial Council Meeting officially began on Tuesday, with Peru participating as a candidate country for accession, representing the voice of a region facing a polarized and complex international situation.
