"Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer welcomes the decision by Congress to authorize President Dina Boluarte Zegarra's trip to Vatican City to attend the enthronement of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV," reads a post on the Foreign Affairs Ministry's official X account.
Thus, "Peru will be represented at the highest level to convey the Peruvian people's immense joy over his election as Supreme Pontiff."
Later, in remarks to the press, the Cabinet member said that there was consensus among several parliamentary groups to grant this authorization, taking into account that Pope Leo XIV, although born abroad, is a naturalized Peruvian citizen.
Furthermore, the ambassador noted that the delegation will be traveling on May 16 to take part in the events marking the beginning of the Supreme Pontiff's papacy.
He also stated that President Boluarte extended invitations to Congress Chairman Eduardo Salhuana, and Judiciary head Janet Tello, with the aim of forming a Peruvian State delegation.
In that regard, he said that Chairwoman Tello thanked for the invitation but, due to her participation in a Latin American-level event, was unable to be present at the ceremony in Vatican City.
In turn, Salhuana expressed his willingness to attend, although the Executive Branch had not yet received an official confirmation.
On the other hand, he urged the parliamentary groups to listen to the presentation by
new Prime Minister Eduardo Arana before expressing an opinion regarding the vote of confidence.
