Peru has announced the extension of the state of emergency in its border areas in order to ensure compliance with immigration laws and to control transnational crime.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Alberto Otarola, who noted that the Peruvian National Police (PNP) has once again been commissioned to be effectively deployed along the country's borders.

"This will help us face transnational and organized crime, as well as improve migratory control," Otarola said at the press conference following a new session of the Council of Ministers on Monday.

In this regard, Interior Minister Vicente Romero affirmed that, in recent months, criminal gangs have been seen operating not only in Peru but also in neighboring countries.

Precisely, he will hold a meeting with his Ecuadorian counterpart on August 25 in Tumbes to refine some strategies that have already been worked on at the Cabinet level in both countries.

Against extortion

Similarly, the Minister of Interior announced the hiring of 200 investigators to reinforce the Anti-Extortion Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at the PNP.

With this staff, we seek to confront extortion —a crime that, he admitted, has increased especially in recent months.
