10:44 | Lima, Nov. 12.

The Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) announced that Peru expects to welcome 1.8 million international visitors this year from the 21 economies that make up the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Similarly, Mincetur emphasized that this influx would account for more than half (51.4%) of the total tourists expected to enter Peru during 2024, when the figure is projected to reach 3.5 million visitors exploring various tourist destinations.

This will strengthen the nation's position in various segments, such as meetings tourism.

The government agency also highlighted that Peru will be in the global spotlight from November 9 to 16, as it hosts APEC Economic Leaders' Week.

This reaffirms, for the third time, the Peruvian commitment to consolidating and strengthening trade relations with Asia-Pacific member economies.

"This will attract a great number of international tourists to the country," Mincetur emphasized.

According to projects, Peru will welcome over 15,000 delegates from all member economies of the bloc this year, including 1,200 business leaders and more than 2,000 journalists from various global media outlets.

These journalists will cover the APEC events positioning Peru as a nation on a path of rising economic development.

Machu Picchu, in Cusco region, remains the top tourist destination and is a historical sanctuary recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

The citadel is one of the main attractions, receiving over 1.1 million visitors during the first nine months of 2024, marking a 73.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

Of these visitors, 76.3% were foreigners, reaffirming the international recognition of this world heritage site.

APEC Peru 2024 also presents an invaluable opportunity to position Peru through tourism, deemed as one of the nation's most important economic activities, thus becoming a key ally in global sustainable economic growth.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
