Peru was elected as a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee for the 2025–2029 term, receiving 88 votes from Member States—one of the highest of the session.

"The new mandate is based on the country’s track record as a custodian of an exceptional and diverse heritage," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, noting that Peru has 13 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List.

These properties range from archaeological monuments to ecosystems of extraordinary biodiversity, such as the Sacred City of Caral-Supe, the oldest civilization in the Americas; the Manu National Park, one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet; and the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, an emblem of the Andes and a global symbol of Peruvian identity.

Protection of Archaeological Sites

As a Committee member, Peru will foster actions aimed at strengthening sustainable conservation, promoting scientific research, expanding regional capacities in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as fostering partnerships among public, private, and community sectors.

"This role will allow the country to actively contribute to the protection of sites that tell the shared history of humanity, while also generating tangible benefits for citizens through the promotion of responsible tourism, opportunities for local communities, and greater international visibility for Peru," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

The World Heritage Committee is the body responsible for implementing the 1972 Convention, UNESCO's flagship instrument for safeguarding cultural and natural heritage of outstanding value.

Its functions include evaluating new nominations, examining the state of conservation of inscribed sites, and adopting essential technical decisions to ensure their long-term preservation.

This is the fourth time Peru has been elected as a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, placing the country once again in a prominent role.

"The country takes on this responsibility with pride, a sense of duty, and a vision focused on sustainable development, inclusion, as well as the protection of the cultural and natural heritage shared by all nations of the world," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out.
