Defense Minister Walter Astudillo on Wednesday called on citizens to stay united and contribute from their side to soon defeating the remnants of terrorism that have done so much harm to Peru, in addition to recognizing the value of our soldiers and police to maintain national peace.

"As a result of the recent military operation carried out by the Joint Special Force in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), three terrorist camps were destroyed; besides, supplies and different items have been recovered, particularly electronic ones that are being evaluated to obtain more information that may be useful for the continuation of operations," he pointed out.

The Cabinet member mentioned that the operation carried out by the Joint Special Force ended the day before in part because it is a permanent process. Besides, the special forces and the rest of personnel from the VRAEM Special Command continue working.

According to the government official, the operations are carried out under strict respect for the legal framework and human rights. They also rely on maximum security measures to minimize personnel casualties.

"Our Armed Forces are constantly monitoring and carrying out operations so that we can live in peace and tranquility. I call on citizens to stay united and contribute to defeating these remnants of terrorism that have caused so much harm to our country," he emphasized.

He stressed that President Dina Boluarte and Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen accompanied Defense sector's officials to receive Tiburcio's remains, which have been transferred to the late soldier's home for his wake to continue.

"This loss is very sensitive for us, because it means that there are people, such as military and police (members), who are capable of giving their lives for the security and defense of our homeland. Let us reflect on the meaning of the death of these personnel," he stated.

"I invite society to reflect on the feelings of their families and children. We have to learn to value the effort and sacrifice of the personnel who wear the homeland's uniform and are permanently offering their lives in defense of the homeland's interests," he expressed.

Remarks were made following the Council of Ministers session at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers headquarters in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
