During a plenary session on Wednesday, Parliament authorized
's trip to the Vatican from May 16 to 19 to attend the solemn Mass marking the beginning of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate.
The legislative resolution authorizing the Head of State to travel abroad was approved with 68 votes in favor, 37 against, and 2 abstentions.
According to the Executive Branch's request, the presence of the top official in Vatican City will ensure Peru's political representation at the highest level in significant international events.
"(...) This can be realized through the presence of the presidents of the nation's branches of government at such an important event, especially given the close relationship with the Holy See and directly with the Holy Father," the official letter stated.
Furthermore, the approved legislative resolution specifies that the Head of State will remain in charge of the Presidency of the Republic using digital technologies, in accordance with Article 8-A of Law No. 29158, the Organic Law of the Executive Branch, as amended by Law No. 31810, as well as the current regulations on digital security and trust in the country.
