17:25 | Lima, Nov. 15.

Congress' plenary session on Sunday afternoon accepted the resignation of Manuel Merino de Lama from the Presidency of the Republic.

The decision was adopted by 120 votes to one with no abstentions.

At the beginning of the session, Congress Chairman Luis Valdez gave an account of the letter sent by Merino to tender his irrevocable resignation from office.

As stated by Valdez, after the vote, Merino would be informed of the resolution, which shall be published in El Peruano official gazette.

In a televised Address to the Nation from the Government Palace in Lima, also on Sunday, Manuel Merino de Lama stepped down from the post of President of the Republic.

Merino has been in office for six days, and his resignation comes after the tragic events that ended up in the death of two young people during the national demonstration held on Saturday in Downtown Lima.

As is known, Merino de Lama became President of the Republic at Congress headquarters last Tuesday.
