Health Minister Hernando Cevallos on Sunday announced that four cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant have been confirmed in Peru.

The minister explained that one of the four cases was detected in a passenger —an anthropologist who arrived at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport from South Africa.

The other three cases were identified in different districts of the Peruvian capital Lima.

"Her 9-year-old son, who has tested positive, is being monitored, as well as her 5-year-old boy and the places that they visited in case they interacted with other people. The same applied to the case of a healthcare worker, who has also tested positive, so as to determine if she has attended meetings and who else attended those meetings," he explained.

The government official commented that these persons are medically stable and isolated until they can no longer spread the infection.

He also noted that epidemiological surveillance measures have been implemented, as well as a contact tracing plan to follow up their relatives living in different districts of Lima Metropolitan Area.

In this regard, the minister reported that two other people, who have been in contact with these confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, have been identified and tested positive for COVID-19.

Cevallos' remarks were delivered during a COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Lima's Villa El Salvador district.
