The Peruvian Government has condemned the destruction of Kakhovka hydroelectric plant dam in Ukraine, which seriously affects the civilian population and compromises said region's environmental security.

"Peru reaffirms the need for a prompt cessation of hostilities, as well as for the immediate start of consultations and negotiations towards a diplomatic, peaceful, and negotiated solution, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and International Law," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a communiqué on Saturday.

This shall imply full respect for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, it added.

About the dam

The Russian-held Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine was ripped open after an explosion in the early hours of June 6, AFP reported.

The damage has worsened due to the torrent of Dnipro River water unleashed by the breach, forcing thousands to flee, disrupting water supplies and sparking fears of an environmental, as well as humanitarian disaster.

Moscow and Kyiv have traded blame for the damage.
