Peru: Chimbote registers highest number of COVID-19 cases, deaths in Ancash

The latest situational report issued by the Regional Health Directorate of Ancash (Diresa Ancash) has confirmed that Santa is the province hosting the highest number of infections and deaths due to the new coronavirus in this Peruvian region.

Thus, the accumulated amount of infected people in the province is 28,577, which represents 60% of the total number of infections registered in Ancash since the state of health emergency began in March 2020.

As for the deceased, of the 2,183 recorded at the regional level, 1,518 belong to Santa Province (69.5% of the total).

The lethality of the virus in Ancash has reached 4.5% after having stood at 4.3% for several weeks.

Chimbote is the epicenter 

Chimbote —capital of Santa Province— remains the "epicenter" of the coronavirus pandemic in Ancash during this second wave.

This port area has registered an accumulation of 14,926 infected people and 1,060 deaths since the state of health emergency was imposed nationwide.

The fatality rate in the most populated city of Ancash is 7.1% —much higher than the national and regional averages.


Health authorities continue to carry out interventions aimed at detecting COVID-19 cases in a timely manner.
