Peru: Carlos Pareja Rios sworn in as Foreign Affairs Minister

The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Thursday swore in Carlos Jose Pareja Rios as the new Foreign Affairs Minister.

The ceremony took place at Government Palace in Lima. 

The swearing-in ceremony was also attended by members of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Luis Arroyo Sanchez. 

Pareja Rios, who replaces the resigning Hugo de Zela Martinez, is a career diplomat with broad professional experience. 

The new Cabinet member previously served as Peru's ambassador to Chile and the United States, holding the latter post until 2018. 

He graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of Peru in 1976 and was promoted to the rank of ambassador in 1997.

His first overseas posting was Spain, and he was later appointed ambassador to Switzerland. 

Pareja Rios served as Director General of Protocol from 2006, leading the organization of international summits such as APEC and the Latin America-Europe Summit. 

Between 2009 and 2014, he served as ambassador to Chile, helping maintain smooth bilateral ties during the maritime dispute case before the International Court of Justice.

In 2016, he assumed the Peruvian Embassy in the United States.
