Peru becomes third largest exporter of rainbow trout

Peru has become the third largest exporter of cultivated rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to US, totaling sales of US$231,000 last year, and US$160,000 in January-April this year, reported the National Fisheries Society (SNP).

Canada is the first exporter of cultivated rainbow trout to US with 665 tones totalizing US$4.2 million sales, fallowed by Colombia with 164 tones representing US$820,000.

Colombia’s trout is around US$5/kg, Canada’s is US$6 and Peruvian trout costs US$7.25.

Despite world financial crisis, US imported some US$32.34 million of trout in 2009, a 40% rise compared to 2008, and produced US$72 million.

US imports fresh and frozen trout as well as frozen filets.

Fisheries Statistics and Economics Division introduced cultivated fresh rainbow trout to the US, which imported US$5.41 million in 2009, a 17% rise compared to 2008.

Likewise, at beginning 2010 SNP included Piscifactorías de los Andes and Peruvian Aquaculture Company as members of its organization.

Peru provides many different places to fish in the Andes the popular rainbow trout. Huancaya is one of the most beautiful places on the central region of the department of Lima in the river of Cañete, where rainbow trout is produced.
