Attorney General Patricia Benavides on Wednesday summoned ex-Minister of Interior Mariano Gonzalez in order to take his statement over the reported events that might constitute alleged criminal acts.

Outgoing Minister Gonzalez said in remarks to RPP that he will attend the summons issued by the Public Ministry, as well as the ones proposed by Congress to make his version of the events known.

As is known, Willy Huerta was sworn in as new Interior Minister on Tuesday night —after President Pedro Castillo via Twitter thanked Gonzalez for the services rendered to the nation.

After hearing the news, outgoing Minister Gonzalez said he was convinced that his departure from the Cabinet was due to his creation of the special team within the National Police of Peru. It was supposed to collaborate with Prosecutor Marita Barreto.

Within this framework, he asked for guarantees for the special team, adding that he will be aware that nothing happens against its members.

Interior Ministry Intelligence Director resigns

Retired National Police General Cesar Vallejos presented his irrevocable resignation to the position of General Director of Intelligence at the Interior Ministry (Digimint) —after the departure of Gonzalez from the ministerial post.

In a letter addressed to recently sworn-in Interior Minister Huerta, Vallejos indicated that he had decided to accept leading the Digimint with the aim of "radically combating common crime and organized crime which have been causing so much harm to the country."

The retired officer deemed as unfortunate the decision of the Head of State to remove Gonzalez from the post, without any justification.
