Peru: Archaeological sites open at 40% capacity in provinces at very high risk level

Archaeological sites and monuments, museums, libraries, cultural centers, and art galleries can be open at 40% capacity in provinces at very high risk level, according to the latest measures adopted by the Executive Branch in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was established by Supreme Decree No. 092-2021-PCM —published in the official gazette El Peruano— which sets capacity limits at public spaces according to the risk level in each province and region, in place until May 30.

Among the archaeological monuments and museums in provinces at very high risk level are the Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu (Cusco), the Archaeological Complex of Chan Chan (Trujillo), as well as the Chavin Archaeological Monument and National Museum (Huari).

The list also includes the Andean Sanctuaries Museum, the Mario Vargas Llosa House Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Santa Teresa Monastery and Museum of Viceregal Art (Arequipa), the Nazca Lines (Nazca), the Julio C. Tello Site Museum (Pisco), and the Adolfo Bermudez Jenkins Regional Museum (Ica).

Other places are the Caral Archaeological Zone, the Vichama Archaeological Complex, the Vegueta Museum (Barranca), the Site Museum of Cabeza de Vaca (Tumbes), the Archaeological-Ethnographic Museum at the Belen Monumental Complex, the Museum of Andean Tools, the Museum of Religious Art at the San Francisco Convent (Cajamarca), the Peañas Site Museum, and the Campo de la Alianza Site Museum (Tacna).

It is worth noting that visitors must observe the protocols implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The provinces at very high risk level for COVID-19 include:

-Chachapoyas, Bagua, Bongara, Condorcanqui, Luya, Rodriguez de Mendoza, and Utcubamba (Amazonas region)
-Aija, Antonio Raimondi, Asuncion, Bolognesi, Carhuaz, Carlos Fermin Fitzcarrald, Casma, Corongo, Huari, Huaraz, Huaylas, Mariscal Luzuriaga, Ocros, Pallasca, Pomabamba, Recuay, Santa, Sihuas, and Yungay (Ancash region)
-Andahuaylas, Antabamba, Aymaraes, and Cotabambas (Apurimac region)
-Arequipa, Camana, Caraveli, Castilla, Caylloma, Condesuyos, and La Union (Arequipa region)
-Cangallo, Huanca Sancos, Lucanas, Parinacochas, Paucar del Sara Sara, Sucre, Victor Fajardo, and Vilcas Huaman (Ayacucho region)
