Peru Air Force cooperates with U.S. jury over cadet accused of raping classmate

13:58 | Lima, May. 6.

Peruvian Air Force (FAP) is providing the necessary support to U.S. jurors in the case of former U.S. Air Force Academy cadet Alvaro Pablo Velarde —a native of Lima, Peru— who was found guilty of raping a fellow cadet in her dorm room in October last year.

According to U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn's office, the 20-year-old international student from Peru was found guilty last Thursday of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of abusive sexual contact.

"The cadet has to take responsibility for his actions before the pertinent authorities, and the Peruvian Air Force is providing the necessary support to U.S. jurors in this sense," FAP said in a statement.

"Notwithstanding the above, FAP —through its Disciplinary Board— has ordered a preliminary investigation to start the discharge process from the (Peruvian Air Force) Officer School," reads the document.

According to the statement, the Peruvian Air Force strongly rejects violence against women in all its forms, which is a fundamental principle of conduct for all members at the institution.

Likewise, it reaffirms its total commitment to defending and supporting justice at all times.
