Peru: 22 ports closed due to atypical waves caused by volcanic eruption in Tonga

09:20 | Lima, Jan. 16.

A total of 22 ports along the north and central coast of Peru have been closed as a preventive measure due to atypical waves caused by the volcanic eruption that occurred 73 km north of Nukualofa (Tonga), the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) has reported.

For its part, the Peruvian Navy (MGP) reported that Harbor Masters along the Peruvian coast, in coordination with the Navy's Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation, have ordered the closure of some ports, beaches, and coves as a preventive measure due to the unusual behavior of the sea.

The closures have been put in place in Punta Arenas and Negritos multibuoy terminals, as well as at MU2 Hybrid and Petroperu liquid cargo docks, along the northern coast.

Peru has also closed Culebras, Vidal, Tambo de Mora, San Andres, La Puntilla, El Chaco, Lagunillas, and Laguna Grande coves; Huarmey, Chico, and Supe Cerro Azul ports; Punta Lobitos; Paramonga multibuoy terminal; LNG-Melchorita, Paracas, and PetroPeru port terminals, as well as Pisco-Camisea (Pluspetrol) marine terminal, all located along the central coast.

In this sense, the MGP recommends that the entire coastal population, as well as those undertaking port, fishing, sport, and recreational activities, take the necessary safety measures to prevent accidents and/or personal and material damage.

It should be pointed out that the Peruvian Navy constantly monitors sea conditions through the National Tsunami Warning Center.

In this regard, it stated that the respective evaluation was carried out following the volcanic eruption in Nukualofa-Tonga, and it was concluded that the conditions were not met to issue a tsunami warning for the Peruvian coast.

However, unusual behaviors have occurred in some coastal areas, which have escalated with reports of atypical waves, combined with high tide.

Moreover, the required technical conditions have not been met to issue a tsunami warning according to the protocols established by the National Tsunami Warning System.

As is known, an undersea volcano erupted on Saturday near the Pacific nation of Tonga sparking tsunami warnings around the Pacific.
