Children 10 and 11 years of age, as well as 5- to 11-years-olds with comorbidities, make up the first group of children to get vaccinated against COVID-19,
Health Ministry (Minsa) Immunization Director Gabriela Jimenez has reported.
According to Jimenez, this has been established in the guidelines of the vaccination protocol for children aged 5 to 11, which has already been approved and will be published in the next few hours.
She went on to say that the second group to get vaccinated is made up of children between 8 and 9 years old, while the third group is made up of children between 5 and 7 years of age.
"The first group will include all children aged 5 to 11 with comorbidities or who are immunosuppressed, in addition to the 10-11 age bracket," Jimenez commented.
"The second age bracket will be 8 to 9 years, and the third one will be 5 to 7 years," she added.
On Wednesday,
Health Minister Hernando Cevallos confirmed that the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines for 5- to 11-year-olds will arrive on January 18, and that the vaccination of this age group will start between January 19 and 20.
The Minsa official said that the vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds is the one developed by Pfizer, noting that it is safe and 90.7% effective at preventing COVID-19 illness.
Moreover, she remarked that the prevalence of COVID-19 infections in children between 5 and 11 years of age is slightly higher than that reported among minors aged 12-17.
