The 56th General Assembly of Panam Sports, formerly known as the Pan American Sports Organization, began Wednesday in Lima, Peru, drawing 250 delegates of the national Olympic committees from the 41 member-states participating.

The meeting is being held in the Peruvian capital just 10 months before the city hosts the Pan American Games, Panam Sports' biggest event, the organization's president, Chile's Neven Ilic, said during the opening ceremony.

The Pan American Olympic movement representatives reviewed the changes and improvements made inside and outside the organization over the past year.

The executive committee will present proposals to create new events, such as the Panamerican Youth Games and the Panamerican Beach Games.

During the opening ceremony, former Jamaican Olympic Committee Chairman Michael Fennell and Central American Sports Organization President Steve Stoute were honored for their contributions to regional sports.

Attending the assembly as guests are International Olympic Committee (IOC) executives and government officials from Chile, which will host the 2023 Pan American Games.

Also present are representatives of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the Youth Olympics, which will be held in Buenos Aires this year.
