—the Pan American sports organization— on Thursday opened its 64th General Assembly in Lima, with the aim of once again holding “the best Pan American Games” in history in the Peruvian capital next year, surpassing those held in 2019.
Panam Sports President Neven Ilic opened the General Assembly by recalling that, in 2019, he closed the Pan American Games by describing them as "the best and largest in history," something he is confident can be surpassed at Lima 2027.
"We have high hopes for these Pan American Games," Ilic stated, underscoring the need to "do a better job because Peru, the Olympic movement, and Panam Sports deserve a great celebration."
"Lima 2027 must be more than a major sporting celebration; we want it to be an opportunity to leave a legacy that endures long after its final competition has ended. I believe that sport is more than a public policy. It gives us discipline, health, unity, but above all, hope," Fujimori stated.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) Chairwoman Kirsty Coventry also attended the meeting.
Conventry expressed confidence that "Lima 2027 will certainly be a complete success."
She voiced her satisfaction at being back in Lima, where the IOC Session was held in 2017, during which Paris and Los Angeles were selected to host the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games, respectively.
In turn, Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP) Chairman Renzo Mangiari praised the "National Government's remarkable and outstanding efforts, in coordination with local authorities, so that the Americas can once again witness Peru's excellence at the service of the Olympic movement."
The annual Panam Sports General Assembly will continue through Friday.
Key decisions will include the selection of the host city for the 2029 Junior Pan American Games and the organization's representative to the Association of National Olympic Committees.
This meeting marks the culmination of Panam Sports Week, which has been held in the Peruvian capital since Monday.
It has featured a series of workshops and forums on women in sport and sports safety for leaders from the 41 Olympic committees that make up the Pan American sports organization.
As part of those activities, the Panam Sports Executive Committee on Wednesday visited the sports facilities that will host the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
These include the Pan American Village, which will host thousands of participants in the event, and the National Sports Village (Videna), which will serve as the main hub of the Games.
