Brazilian construction firm OAS is due to wrap up construction on Peru's US$94.7mn Huascacocha dam project in May.

Work is currently around 98% complete, Lima water utility Sedapal said in a release.

OAS has a concession to build, operate and maintain a dam and water transfer system from the Huascacocha lake in Pasco region to the existing Marca III system and then to the Rímac river in capital Lima.

According to a report from BNAmericas, the project includes building a 15m dam wall that will store 686Mm3 of water. The project also includes building 22.5km of transfer pipelines.

The facility will supply up to 2.61m3/s to feed the Huachipa potable water plant, benefitting 2.4mn residents in Lima and neighboring port city Callao. The plant, built by Brazil's Camargo Corrêa and French firm OTV, is currently in the test phase.

Peruvian electricity generator Edegel is co-financing the Huascacocha dam as part of an agreement with Sedapal, under which the power company will use water from Huascacocha to supply four hydroelectric plants.

Work on the project began in 2008.
