The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo is committed to serving as the leader of all Peruvians and working with all political forces willing to provide solutions to the country, Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Luis Almagro affirmed on Wednesday.

After holding a meeting at the Government Palace, the foreign official remarked that the Head of State "has very important knowledge of social dynamics in Peru; therefore, based on that, he relies on the constructions which will be important in productive, economic, and social terms."

Likewise, the OAS Secretary General highlighted the determination of the Head of State to fight corruption, essentially under his administration.

"He wants his administration to be as clean as possible, and that requires important efforts in the fight against corruption, in investigations, in the permanent following up so that there can be transparency, justice (…)", Almagro expressed.

The OAS Secretary General commented that during the meeting with the President they reviewed the agenda of this organization, remembering that 20 years have passed since the Inter-American Democratic Charter was approved, which —he said— is the Constitution of the Americas.

"It provides us with the main elements for democratic functioning, the instruments to defend democracy, and somehow it has been the offspring of Peru, the main driving country and where it was approved," he remarked.

In addition, Almagro mentioned that in 2022 the 20th anniversary of the Inter-American Convention Against Terrorism will be commemorated —a work expected to be strengthened and have better projects linked to it, as well as in the fight against drug trafficking.

He also stressed that next year Peru will host the OAS General Assembly due to a decision approved by acclamation of member States.

"We hope that the assembly will be a dynamic element in Inter-American relations," he added after noting that there is plenty of work ahead due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Castillo's concerns —he said— are linked to Peru having the best instruments to combat COVID-19, as well as in favor of economic and social reactivation.

"These are things that will definitely be important for that General Assembly next year," he stated.
