The celebrations to welcome the New Year 2025 in the Plaza de Armas of the city of Cusco will only be until 2 a.m. to guarantee order, security and avoid excesses that could damage the monumental cultural heritage, indicated today the National Police of Peru (PNP).
General PNP Julio César Becerra Cámara, head of the Cusco Police Region, confirmed to the Andina News Agency that the multisectoral authorities agreed on measures, each according to their competencies, for the well-being of visitors and Cusco families.
Starting tonight, a group of local artists will liven up New Year arrival from a stage that was installed at the foot of the cathedral basilica, from where there will be sound, music and the traditional countdown of the arrival of 2025 will be given.
As usual, the citizens and tourists who arrived massively will bring fireworks, alcoholic beverages and suits, in which the color yellow will predominate; in addition to a series of objects such as suitcases, fruit, flowers, which are part of rituals.
The police authority stated that to strengthen security and public order in Cusco, there are more than 3,000 police officers, a number greater than in previous years, because the Imperial City was recognized by the prestigious international travel and tourism magazine Condé Nast Traveler as a must-see place to celebrate the welcome of 2025.
The officers from different divisions, units and police stations, both uniformed and civilian, supported by members of Serenazgo (Town council’s security force), will be in the Historic Center and in vulnerable areas, considered at risk. They will be on high alert for any incident, crime or illicit activity.
However, the authorities determined that the party will last until after 1 a.m. and, starting at 2 a.m. they will begin to arrange for the withdrawal of the public to provide peace of mind to the citizens, to the same national and foreign visitors and, above all, to protect the Historic Center of the city, declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation, Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and many other recognitions.
The Tourism Police and State Security of the PNP will pay more attention to tourists, both national and foreign, who will arrive in Cusco.
Likewise, the Highway Police will prevent traffic accidents, as have been recorded in recent weeks with fatal results. The work will be coordinated with the Public Ministry, Firefighters, and other authorities.
Security in nightclubs
The Provincial Municipality of Cusco and the PNP will also strengthen security in nightclubs to avoid situations that alter public order and guarantee the safety of those attending these recreational environments. Those establishments that violate the rules or act outside the law will be immediately intervened and closed, the authorities warned.
Becerra Cámara stated that they will try to have fewer incidents, as reflected during the Christmas celebration, with an operational plan that allowed Cusco families to enjoy themselves. On this occasion, they recommend to measure drinking alcoholic beverages and not driving under the influence.
