Beatles legend Paul McCartney gave his first concert in Peru on Monday before tens of thousands of cheering fans who packed the Estadio Monumental in Lima.

McCartney opened the Lima gig, part of his Up and Coming tour, with Beatles song "Hello Goodbye," and addressed the 40,000-strong audience in Spanish and English.

"Hola Perú, por fin estoy en Perú," he said, "estoy muy contento de estar aquí. Esta noche trataré de hablar en español, pero obviamente lo haré más en inglés."

The crowd made up of Peruvians of all ages waved its arms in the air as the British star performed some of his biggest hits during more than two hours of almost non-stop music.

His repertoire featured many Beatles hits, as well as songs from his post-Beatles group, Wings. The songs included "All my loving," "The long and widing road," "When I'm 64," "Let'm in," "And I love her," "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da," and Wings track "Jet."

McCartney, who wore a blue jacket over a pink shirt, also performed the crowd favorites "Hey, Jude," and "Yesterday" and dedicated “Heart today” to late Beatle John Lennon.

The 68-year-old rocker closed out the most eagerly-anticipated concert in local music history with "Helter Skelter," "Sargent Pepper" and "The end."

The star's historic concert at the Estadio Monumental in the Peruvian capital on Monday marked his first live show of 2011.
