One of the legends of Peruvian soccer, Hugo Alejandro Sotil Yerén, better known as “Cholo Sotil”, died today at the age of 75, the Spanish Barcelona team FC Barcelona announced today, a club for which he played between 1973 and 1976.
Born in Ica on May 18, 1949, he was one of the best forwards in Peruvian football, and his name shone alongside other figures of Peruvian football such as Teófilo Cubillas and Héctor Chumpitaz in the 1970s.
“FC Barcelona regrets the death of Hugo Sotil, a Barcelona player between 1973 and 1976, and wants to express its condolences to the club. Condolences to the family and friends. Rest in peace, Cholo,” the Spanish Barcelona team said today on its Twitter account.
“Farewell to Cholo Sotil, a skilful, elusive, brave and intuitive forward,” FC Barcelona highlighted in another tweet.
Sotil was recently admitted last Thursday, December 19 of this year to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Dos de Mayo in Lima, due to some complications in his health.
Previosuly, in November of this year, 'Cholo' Sotil was in Barcelona for the celebration events of the 125th anniversary of the Spanish club, one of the most emblematic in Europe and the world.
Sotil is considered one of the most emblematic players of the Peruvian national team, with which he participated in the World Cups in Mexico in 1970 and Argentina in 1978, and also won the Copa América in 1975.
The former footballer stood out in Peruvian football with Deportivo Municipal and Alianza Lima, a club with which he was crowned national champion in 1977 and 1978.
Sotil also in his last years as a footballer he played for Independiente Medellín of Colombia and Los Espartanos and Deportivo Junín of Peru.
