Peruvian Ambassador to the United States Luis Valdivieso said Wednesday that President Alan Garcia’s meeting with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama represents a step forward in the strengthening of bilateral relations.

"This visit has proved successful because it will further reinforce the strategic relations between the two countries. President Garcia received a warm and hospitable welcome, and that makes me feel proud as a Peruvian," he said.

The diplomat noted the “good chemistry” between the two presidents who discussed a wide range of global issues during their hour-long meeting in the Oval Office of the White House.

On Tuesday evening, Presidents Obama and Garcia discussed ways to improve the global economy, promote democracy, address nuclear nonproliferation and reduce global warming, among other issues.

In a meeting that also covered bilateral trade issues and poverty alleviation, the two leaders agreed to continue to pursue the details of the free trade agreement enacted between the countries last year.

According to Ambassador Valdivieso, at their meeting President Garcia extended an invitation to Barack Obama to visit Peru and learn about the country's achievements in several areas.
