Former Fin Min: FED rate reduction provides space for BCR to boost economy

09:28 | Lima, Mar. 4.

Peru's former Economy and Finance Minister Alonso Segura (2014-2016) has affirmed that the U.S. Federal Reserve (FED) interest rate reduction will give space for the Peruvian Central Reserve Bank (BCR) to boost the domestic economy.

As is known, the FED on Tuesday decided to reduce interest rates in the United States to curb the economic impacts of coronavirus. It is an extraordinary cut, not seen since the 2008 crisis.

"The Committee is closely monitoring developments and their implications for the economic outlook and will use its tools and act as appropriate to support the economy," it added.

Segura explained that this reduction responds to the United States' concern about the impact —not yet measurable— of the outbreak on the world economy.

"The rate reduction evidently responds to the situation specifically generated by the coronavirus, to which the FED applies an expansive monetary policy in order to stimulate the economy," he said.
