Former Fin Min: Peruvian economy may grow 3.5% in 2020

16:20 | Lima, Dec. 17.

Peru's GDP growth rate may reach 3.5% next year, former Economy and Finance Minister Alonso Segura projected on Tuesday.

"If the world remains sustained and the public sector moves forward, the country's growth may be a little better than that projected for this year (around 2.3% according to Segura) and slightly exceed 3% or (reach) 3.5% in 2020," he estimated.

Segura said the South American country's growth is due to external more than internal factors. Thus, people must be aware of its potential, diversification, and increased productivity to break that condition of dependence.

He stressed that the pending agenda to boost the country requires institutional strengthening, as well as promoting the political and justice reform.

The economist also said that adds to the need to carry out a reform of decentralization, competitiveness, innovation, and digitalization, as well as to chart an agenda of productive diversification, among other factors.

Remarks were made during the 2019 AAP Automotive Meeting held in Lima and organized by the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP).

As is known, Alonso Segura served as Economy and Finance Minister from September 2014 to July 2016.
