Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer highlighted the consensus approval of 20 documents during Leaders' Week in Lima, which marked the conclusion of Peru's Presidency of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

"Unlike previous APEC editions, we truly set a record; I say this with pride, without false modesty, because it is Peru where we achieved 20 documents by consensus," Schialer highlighted on November 20.

"To put it in perspective, previous APEC forums typically resulted in three or four documents, at most five," he added.

The ambassador stated that documents are approved by consensus at APEC, which is very important because it reflects the positive will of the forum's member economies.

"These are 11 ministerial declarations approved by consensus, along with at least eight technical-political documents approved in various areas: financial inclusion, women, environment, and trade mining, which were adopted at this very important event held in Peruvian territory," he indicated.

State and official visits

The Cabinet member said the Foreign Affairs Ministry worked to ensure not only the success of Leaders' Meeting but also to give "momentum and drive" to Peru's political, diplomatic, and overall relations with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

In this sense, the ambassador mentioned the state visits of the dignitaries from the People's Republic of China and Brunei Darussalam, as well as the official visits from Viet Nam, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, and Japan, which resulted in the signing of over 70 documents and specific, significant outcomes for various national sectors and areas.

In this regard, the diplomat emphasized that in addition to the Chancay Port inauguration, it is also important to highlight the donation of equipment to combat forest fires, including fire trucks worth US$2.7 million from Japan.

Furthermore, he mentioned a credit line for micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which includes a donation component of approximately US$20 million from this country.

Peru hosted APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
