Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer endorsed the election of his Surinamese counterpart, Albert Ramdin, as the new Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), during the session held this Monday in Washington, D.C., United States.

During his speech at the 56th Special Session of the OAS General Assembly, Schialer stated that he supported the proposal previously put forward by Dominica's Foreign Affairs Minister, Vince Henderson, for Ramdin to be elected by acclamation.

This is due to the fact that Paraguay withdrew the candidacy of its Foreign Minister, Ruben Ramirez Lezcano, for the position a few days ago.

"Peru supports the proposal for the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Suriname, His Excellency Albert Ramdin, to be elected by acclamation by this Special General Assembly as Secretary General of the OAS for the 2025–2030 term," Schialer stated, after which a round of applause sealed Ramdin's election.

Earlier, the Peruvian government official extended his warmest congratulations to Chilean Foreign Affairs Minister, Alberto van Klaveren, on his election to preside over the current General Assembly session.

Peru's Full Support

Following the election, Ambassador Schialer stated that Ramdin has Peru's full support.

Similarly, the Cabinet member highlighted the significance of him being the first elected Secretary General from the Caribbean.

Likewise, he emphasized that the broad support for his candidacy reflects the confidence that his leadership will address the diverse needs of all member states.

The diplomat also expressed Peru's gratitude to outgoing Secretary General Luis Almagro for his work throughout a decade at the OAS.

Furthermore, Minister Schialer stated that Peru is firmly committed to the hemispheric organization and affirmed that our country will continue supporting all initiatives to restore democracy in Venezuela.

Moreover, he emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation among member states to combat transnational crime and the criminal organization Tren de Aragua.

"My country will propose that this organization give top priority to concrete actions aimed at decisively halting the terrorist activities of Tren de Aragua and other similar organizations," Schialer concluded.
