EU and CAN seek cooperation opportunities in investments and digital trade

15:17 | Lima, Feb. 8.

The Andean Community (CAN) General Secretariat on Thursday hosted a seminar, with the aim of identifying opportunities for cooperation with the European Union (EU) in matters such as investments, trade, as well as green and digital transitions.

Representatives from the public and private sectors, academia, as well as technical and financial cooperation participated in the activity. They exchanged opinions on the results and opportunities generated by the EU-CELAC Summit.

Among the addressed topics were: Global Gateway agenda; challenges and opportunities of green transition for sustainable and fair development; dimensions of fair digital transformation for economic growth; among others.

The seminar was inaugurated by CAN Secretary-General Gonzalo Gutierrez; European Union International Foundation for Latin America and the Caribbean Executive-Director, Adrian Bonilla; and EU Charge d'Affaires to Peru, Narcisa Vladulescu.

The Peruvian ambassador underscored that the Global Gateway agenda addresses investment gaps in line with common priorities of the European Union and Latin America-the Caribbean, seeking to boost a fair, green, ecological, and digital transition.

"There is no doubt that digitalization is a fundamental factor for development and regional integration in our countries," Gutierrez stated.

"From the CAN General Secretariat, we recognize the importance of addressing the challenges and opportunities offered by the digital era and the need to adapt to an increasingly connected world," he added.

Likewise, the diplomat underlined that the CAN counts on the EU as an ally which shares the vision that technology can boost economic growth, attract investments, as well as promote trade and the green transition for the benefit of citizens.

"Today, we attended the International Seminar on Opportunities for Andean Countries in European Union Cooperation: Global Gateway, investments, trade, as well as green and digital transitions, which seeks to identify opportunities for EU-Andean Community cooperation," the European Union Mission in Peru reported via Twitter.

During this event, Vladulescu thanked the organizers for hosting this seminar of high relevance for the EU, for covering topics such as Global Gateway, investments, trade between Europe and Latin America, green transition, and digital transformation.
