12:30 | Panama City (Panama), Mar. 3.
Peru has made significant progress in the fight for the conservation of oceans and rivers and is implementing various strategies nationwide,
Environment Minister Albina Ruiz stated at the 8th
Our Ocean Conference held in Panama.
This conference brings together leaders from governments and businesses, as well as global leaders and people involved in protecting oceans.
At Panel 2 "Marine Pollution: Ridding the World of Ocean Contamination" on global action against plastic, Minister Ruiz lamented that this type of pollution has reached the waters of rivers and lakes, even affecting fish in the Peruvian Amazon area.
Plastic and solid waste
The head of the
Ministry of Environment (Minam) noted that Law No. 30884 was enacted in 2018. This law prohibits single-use plastic items, disposable expanded polystyrene containers and straws, and requires that
plastic beverage containers must include at least 15% recycled content.
Ruiz highlighted that the regulation is in full force and that its drafting involved an important citizen participation led by the Government, represented by the Minam.
Within the framework of solid waste management, the minister said that Clean Production Agreements have been implemented with industrial companies in the fishing and aquaculture sectors.
"They (industrial companies) pledged to work on issues of eco-efficiency and waste recovery," she remarked.
