Peruvian power utility Electro Oriente, which serves regions Loreto and San Martín, has submitted an EIS to the energy and mines ministry to expand the Iquitos thermoelectric plant which boasts 49MW effective capacity.
The 29-month project entails increasing the plant's capacity by 20.5MW and is needed to meet growing demand in the city of Iquitos and the surrounding area, according to the document.
The area's capacity demand is set to reach 44.4MW this year, 48.7MW in 2010, 62.1MW in 2015 and 77.5MW in 2020.
BNamericas reported that the company has budgeted 90.4mn-107mn soles (US$30.9mn-36.6mn) for the expansion.
At the end of last year, the Iquitos system served 59,452 clients.
