BAP Union reaffirms Peru's commitment to democracy before international community

18:31 | Lima, Apr. 28.

Peruvian Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen highlighted the journey of the Peruvian Navy's BAP Union sailing training ship and its crew, who arrived at Callao Naval Base on Sunday afternoon after traveling the seas of five continents and visiting 23 ports around the world, in which they fostered trade ties and spread Peruvian culture.

"The international community understands that Peru is making the greatest efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and to address the needs of our population, always promoting consensus with all sectors across the country," the Cabinet chief said.

Adrianzen, who was accompanied by State Ministers and Armed Forces authorities, described the BAP Union's mission as the best tribute that the Navy has paid to Peru, within the framework of the Bicentennial of Independence.

"We make history today, after 168 years: a sailing ship travels around the planet and does so on behalf of our Navy and State. The Bicentennial is an opportunity for all Peruvians to reaffirm our commitment to the homeland," he added.

BAP Union, considered the largest and fastest sailing ship in Latin America, has returned to Peru after traveling around the world for 10 months and a half. Its first destination was the island of Tahiti, in French Polynesia.

Products grown by Peruvian farmers such as potatoes, quinoa, corn, and fruits were exhibited at the "Peru Room" inside the ship, as well as cultural wealth expressed in crafts, ceramics, textiles and, of course, Peruvian music.

During the journey, BAP Union Commander Captain Jose Luis Arce met with high State authorities, such as Pope Francis; the king of Spain, Felipe VI; foreign affairs ministers of various countries, among others.

"On behalf of the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, the Government and the Peruvian people, I want to thank the crew of BAP Union for having represented and left the name of Peru high," he stressed.
