APEC Peru 2024: What trade opportunities are available to Peruvian exporters?

Peru is positioned as a key player in international trade by hosting the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Week to be held from November 10 to 16, 2024.

The event —which will bring together 21 economies made up of APEC members, accounting for 62% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP)— offers valuable opportunities for Peruvian exporters.

Local entrepreneurs must be prepared to make the most of these global connections, especially those interested in products with high potential in the APEC market.

In this regard, Rextie specialists analyze the commercial opportunities and strategies that Peruvian exporters can harness to maximize their success in this environment of cooperation and growth.

APEC will promote quality economic growth among its members through economic and technical cooperation, human security, trade, investment, digital economy, economic inclusion, and support for initiatives to improve sectoral public policies, among others.

It is important to note that, for the global economy and the region, the 21 APEC member economies jointly accounted for 62% of global GDP and 48% of global trade in 2022.

Thus, Peruvian exporters have a window of opportunity:

1. Trade agreements. Peru has an extensive network of trade agreements with APEC member economies, which facilitates access to these markets. This includes free trade agreements with economies such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand.

2. Logistics infrastructure is constantly improving. Projects such as the Port of Chancay and the expansion of Jorge Chavez International Airport will reduce transport times and increase efficiency in trade.

The inauguration of the Chancay Multipurpose Port will serve to boost the attraction of tourists from the Asian market.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), 2.5 million international tourists arrived in Peru in 2023, a 25.7% increase compared to the figure recorded in 2022, including an increase in visitors from Asia and Oceania.

3. Export diversification. In addition to traditional products, such as minerals and agricultural goods, Peru is increasing its exports of services and intangibles.

This includes the following sectors: software, digital animation, and digital marketing.

4. Untapped opportunities. According to the Peruvian Exporters Association (Adex), there are 425 untapped business opportunities with APEC member economies.

These cover various sectors and can be an excellent way to expand trade.

5. Ease of business travel. The ABTC Card (APEC Business Travel Card) is offered, allowing businesspeople to enter 19 APEC economies without the need for a business visa for up to 90 days.

These benefits are very attractive for Peruvian exporters. Knowing how to harness them will allow exporters to expand their presence in APEC markets and diversify their products.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
