Peruvian Ambassador to the United States Hugo de Zela has affirmed that the relationship between the administration of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden and our country will be positive and very dynamic, thanks to the ties it maintains with Latin America.

In this sense, the envoy explained that one of the fundamental affairs of the future Biden administration is to have a "more comprehensive and consistent" approach with the traditional stance of the United States.

"The relationship with the presidency (of Joe) Biden will be positive and very dynamic with regards to Peru," he said in remarks to TVPeru.

Ambassador De Zela recalled that —when Biden served as Vice-President in Barack Obama's administration— he was in charge of the relations with countries in the region and made many trips to different countries, so "it will be a very positive stage in the relationship with Latin America and —in particular— with Peru."

In this sense, the diplomat said that some common affairs between the United States and Peru are the joint fight against COVID-19 and climate change. In this field, Peru has a position of leadership.

Concerning trade matters, he mentioned the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that will allow bilateral trade flows to expand.

In this regard, he considered that the balance of this trade agreement is positive, because it allowed for a growth in exports to the North American nation, especially in the agricultural sector.

On the other hand, De Zela said that President-elect Joe Biden made clear that his administration will be based on multilateralism, returning to the Paris Agreement, as well as to the World Health Organization (WHO); and that it will strongly resume the relationship with traditional allies of the United States, such as European countries.
