Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed the country is taking steps towards the long-awaited political-justice reform proposed to Congress and said he expects them to be passed by a referendum on December 9.

Speaking during the 73rd United Nations General Assembly, the Head of State emphasized that a series of draft bills were submitted to Parliament less than two months ago.

The initiative was aimed at consolidating the changes in the Inca country.

"I am pleased to announce that Peru is moving towards the long-awaited political and justice administration system reform through constitutional and participatory mechanisms honoring the commitments made at the Lima-hosted Summit (of the Americas)," he assured his peers.

According to the high-ranking official, the matter involves constitutional reforms.

Peru's top official went on to stress the fact that his administration received Congress' confidence vote days ago.

The statesman also mentioned Parliament's commitment to submitting the initiatives to a referendum on December 9, so that citizens will voice their opinion on the matter.

"We are convinced that only joint efforts undertaken by the three branches of government, transparency, accountability, and citizens' participation will allow us to build the country we deserve," he stated.
