Peru President convinced Congress will approve reforms

18:19 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Sep. 20.

President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed he is confident Congress will approve the pending constitutional reforms so they can be subject to a referendum on December 9.

Therefore, the population will be able to voice its opinion on the concerning issues later this year.

Within this framework, the Head of State indicated the Legislative Branch is committed to pushing forward the proposals submitted by the Executive Power.

"They will approve them; I have no doubts about it; that's what institutions are for, that's what commitments are for," the Peruvian leader expressed.

"(…) It's a compromise with the 30 million Peruvians," he pointed out.

According to the statesman, the Supreme Decree —that introduced the confidence motion— was very clear in this sense.

"Congress has committed to the Executive Branch and the country to approving the four reforms," he said.

Thus, Vizcarra underlined the referendum can be held on December 9, adding all citizens will be able to vote civically and responsibly on that date.

Remarks were made after visiting Arequipa region's leather and footwear's productive innovation and technology transfer center.
