President: Peru must be based on inclusion, respect for diversity

| Lima, Jul. 7.
The
President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti
affirmed that
in the coming years Peru shall be based on inclusion and respect for diversity, in addition to removing the scourges which cause plenty of harm to the nation, such as femicide.
Within this framework, the
Head of State indicated that it is necessary to honor the legacy received from generations of Peruvians who contributed to the development of the nation and —in a particular way— honor the contribution of many Peruvian heroines of nowadays and forever.
"As a society, we must commit ourselves so that in the following years Peru is based on gender equality, inclusion, and respect for diversity. This seems to me the best way to honor our 200 years of republican life,"
he expressed.
Likewise,
the top official highlighted the work and participation of women in national development. In this sense, the statesman mentioned that the Council of State is made up mostly of women, which is something unprecedented in the history of the nation.
In this regard, the Peruvian leader affirmed that the next Congress of the Republic —to be sworn in later this month— will be made up of 40% of women legislators —the highest number in recent years.
"Although these are significant achievements, it must be admitted that we still have a lot to do," he pointed out.
Moreover,
the President reminded female citizens that COVID-19 is currently a problem for Peruvian society, adding that it also affects Peruvian women who are heads of households —which could also mean a setback in closing gaps.
"Coronavirus affects Peruvian women as does the other pandemic, the pandemic of gender-based violence which, unfortunately in its most serious aspect, is femicide that remains a social evil and that we must eradicate," he emphasized.
Mr. Sagasti also stressed that the
Government's intention is to vindicate the valuable contribution of women in the construction and consolidation of the nation during these 200 years of independent life.
Remarks were made during his participation in the Women and Bicentennial Forum organized by the Constitutional Court.
