Peru is prepared for the eventuality of a third coronavirus wave, supported by more ICU beds, oxygen surplus, a higher number of health personnel and an advanced vaccination process, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte confirmed on Wednesday.

"The Government has been preparing, in various aspects, in the event of a third wave; that is why we currently have more ICU beds and more oxygen," he expressed.

After indicating that Delta variant cases pose the risk of spreading infections, the minister said he hoped that an eventual third wave would be less intense than the second one.

As an example, the Cabinet member mentioned the increase in infections registered in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany, where this variant is the cause of more than 50% of reported cases.

"Looking at this international experience, we must assume that in Peru, although we have few cases (of the Delta variant), the fact that it is already present means it is expanding," he noted.

Faced with this reality, the high-ranking official affirmed that immunization is a fundamental weapon against this virus.

In this sense, the government official said it has been proven worldwide that the different brands of vaccines, which have been applied, are effective against COVID-19.
