President confirms he will declare a state of emergency at Peru-Chile border

The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, on Friday afternoon confirmed that he will declare a state of emergency at the border with Chile to ensure calm amid the risk of unauthorized migrants entering Peru, which could threaten public security in our country.

On his social media account, the top official stated that the irregular entry of migrants could threaten public security in Peru.

We are not considering declaring it — we are going to declare a state of emergency at the border with Chile to ensure calm amid the risk of unauthorized migrants entering, which could threaten public security in our country," he pointed out. 


Likewise, the top official specified that the National Superintendence of Migrations and the Peruvian National Police will intensify identity checks to ensure calm of citizens.

In turn, Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela stated that Peru will not allow irregular migration at the border with Chile.

In remarks to reporters at the Government Palace, the minister said that, in coordination with the neighboring country, it was agreed to establish a Binational Committee on Migration Cooperation set to take up duties on December 1.

He also emphasized that this afternoon, during the extraordinary Council of Ministers meeting, a state of emergency will be declared at the border in order to strengthen migration control.
