Peru: Tourist who died from lightning strike in Cusco's high altitude area identified

The Cusco Region Police confirmed on Thursday that the tourist who died from a lightning strike along the Occoruro–Yaurisque route, on the border of Cusco and Paruro provinces, has been identified. He is Boteldo Yuri Pereira, 36, a Brazilian national.

According to preliminary investigations by the Yaurisque Paruro police station, the unfortunate tourist had climbed the summit at an altitude of 4,237 meters above sea level, along with U.S. citizen James Alexander Fernandez, 41, and tour guide Dani Peralta, 35.

The group was caught by the lightning strikes while taking part in the adventure sport of downhill cycling.

Following the incident, they alerted the Radio Patrol Police on Thursday at around 3:30 p.m. (local time).

Police agents arrived with several units, assisted James Alexander, and evacuated him to the Regional Hospital emergency department.

Meanwhile, Peralta confirmed that he and the two tourists were conducting the activity when they were struck by lightning.

The case was referred to the Paruro Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, which ordered the retrieval of the body and its transfer to the local morgue.
