The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Friday asserted that some 21 million citizens have already received two vaccine doses against coronavirus. They represent 80% of the inoculated population and the goal reached by the Government in defense of health.

"Together with the State, civil society and the private sector, we have enabled the vaccination to reach the entire national territory. We knew it would be a huge challenge, especially in a country like Peru, full of contrasts," Mr. Castillo indicated during a ceremony in which an assessment of the immunization process in Peru was presented.

The Head of State pointed out that the Government had ordered an investment of more than S/2.3 billion (over US$575 million) for the purchase of vaccines, which meant an effort in terms of financial and human resources for the sake of immunization.

Likewise, the top official remarked that in recent months it was decided to open the vaccination process for the administration of booster doses.

"During these months, we have not only administered the two doses, but we also opened the process of booster doses for health sector workers, firefighters, Armed and Police Forces, cleaning personnel, and now also citizens aged above 18," he remarked.

Similarly, the President announced that the arrival of the first pediatric vaccines has already been assured for the fortnight of January 2022, which will allow the immunization of children between 5 and 11 years of age so as to ensure their return to face-to-face classes.

In addition, Mr. Castillo pointed out that in the course of 2022 another 55 million vaccines will land in Peru to continue with the vaccination process, adding that 64 new oxygen plants will be set up, among other measures to strengthen the care level.

The event was attended by Cabinet Chief Mirtha Vasquez, as well as Ministers Hernando Cevallos (Health) and Oscar Maurtua (Foreign Affairs), among other health sector authorities.
