Peru currently has 33 power generation projects under construction, representing an estimated investment of US$6.5 billion and expected to add over 5,000 megawatts (MW) of new installed capacity between 2026 and 2036,
The government official participated in the Smart Energy Summit 2026, an event that brings together key players from the renewable energy, storage, and ancillary services sectors.
Within this framework, Santillan indicated that the portfolio comprises 11 solar plants and five wind farms, 16 hydropower projects, and one natural gas-fired power plant.
Likewise, he highlighted that there are 52 power transmission projects, representing an investment worth over US$3 billion, to ensure the evacuation of generated electricity and strengthen the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN).
Of this total, 33 projects are under construction, representing an investment of US$2.111 billion across 20 Peruvian regions. Meanwhile, another 19 projects are in the awarding and contracting phase, with an investment of US$966.1 million in 13 regions.
Santillan recalled that Peru's electricity system has added more than 10,900 kilometers of transmission lines over the past 18 years, bringing the total length of its networks to more than 20,000 kilometers.
The deputy minister stressed that these efforts are being carried out within the framework of the National Energy Policy 2010-2040. It guides Peru toward a reliable, regular, continuous, and efficient electricity system, underpinned by planning and technological innovation.
In this regard, he identified four strategic priorities for the electricity sector: energy security, with an emphasis on the reliability of the interconnected system and the provision of services to isolated systems; investment and infrastructure, through the monitoring of power generation, transmission, and distribution projects.
The other priorities are: closing gaps, through rural electrification and solutions tailored to the Amazon; and regulatory modernization, aimed at simplifying regulations, enhancing predictability, and incorporating new technologies.
